Legacy Parks Foundation announced the acquisition of three islands bordering Seven Islands State Birding Park in east Knox County, a purchase that completes the protection of all of the islands related to state park.
Legacy Parks was awarded a grant from the Tennessee Heritage Conservation Trust Fund to acquire the parcels.
“We are thrilled to conserve these beautiful and historical lands along our French Broad River and are looking forward to the community making great use of this amazing riverfront property and beautiful stretch of river,” said Evans.
The ecological significance of the properties and the area is nationally noted. It is arguably the most richly diverse property in the region. More than 40 species of fish are found in this section of river and more than 200 varieties of birds.
Seven Islands State Birding Park spans 416 acres along the French Broad River, with eight miles of walking trails, two boat launch, historic structures and more than 222 bird species. It was named Park of the Year in 2013 and recently was awarded the Excellent in Visitor Experience award in 2024.
Through the years, Legacy Parks has helped preserve over 1,000 acres throughout the region and is also able to accept gifts of land to preserve it for future generations.
