Legacy Parks Foundation announced the launch of a $1.5 million fundraising campaign to create a new Veterans Memorial Park along the French Broad River.

The park will be created on a parcel of land located off John Sevier Highway that overlooks the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery and the beautiful French Broad River. The property was donated to Legacy Parks by Blue Water Industries.

This memorial park will provide a place for reflection, commemoration and celebration – and will be designed by veterans organizations with the help of the East Tennessee Community Design Center. Plans include a covered pavilion for services, meditation and private areas for reflection overlooking the beautiful French Broad River, memorials and benches along an accessible walkway, and a natural surface path that winds along the edge of the river bluff. There are plans to bring in some memorial flags (mounted on wooden flagpoles) that are scattered down the riverbank to show the reasons behind the park, so that anyone enjoying the space will be able to look up and remember.

Mayor Glenn Jacobs kicked off the fundraising effort with a donation of $250,000 from Knox County. Once one person donates, more are likely to follow! But there are different ways of fundraising of course, another great example is the Chipotle Fundraising effort which is just as successful. There are different ways to raise money for charity, and it’s about knowing how to encourage people to donate.
