Explore the great outdoors with fitness adventurer Missy Kane!

We’ll hike, bike, paddle, discover new places, socialize with fun folks, have fun and get fit! The monthly outings are perfect for both new adventurers and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts. And we’ll have some special evening events and an overnight trip or two.

Everyone is welcome! The adventures are free for Friends of Legacy Parks and $10 per event for non-friends.

Led by Olympian and fitness enthusiast Missy Kane, the series offers:

  • A Friday morning adventure every month – hike, bike, paddle and explore!
  • The “Off the Beaten Path” Challenge – explore Missy’s recommended hikes on your own. Explore all 10 and earn a patch!
  • Special events, including a Fit & Fun Adventure Night at the Knoxville Adventure Collective in March and a LeMond E-Bike Demo Night in April.
  • An out-of-town adventure in the fall for participants who are also Friends of Legacy Parks.

$10 per adventure

Adventure Calendar

Fort History Hike (Sold Out!)

Date: January 21th 9 a.m. – 12 noon

We’ll meet at Fort Dickerson and hike a 3-4 mile loop with a historian who will tell about the forts in South Knoxville and they role they played in Knoxville’s history. Reward yourself with an optional lunch at the legendary Round-Up.

Alex Haley Heritage Hike (Sold Out!)

Date: February 11th 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Meet at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center and walk the greenway to the Alex Haley statue. We will explore Morningside Park and learn about the heritage of Alex Haley and some history of East Knoxville. Pack a lunch to join us for an optional picnic inside the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center after the hike.

Oak Ridge Hike (Sold Out!)

Date: March 11
Take a hike with us in Oak Ridge as we discover new trails and greenway that you may not have hiked before. We will learn some interesting facts about Oak Ridge’s history as a “Secret City”. You might find a new hike to add to your list which isn’t as far away as you might think!

Hastie Wildflower Hike (Sold Out!)

Date: April 8

Hike through William Hastie Natural Area in South Knoxville with Missy and a wildflower expert to search from spring blooms and learn about the native wildflowers that grow in East Tennessee.

Paddle the French Broad River (Sold Out!)

Date: May 6

Enjoy a group paddle on the beautiful French Broad River with Missy & Friends! We will see a new view of Seven Islands State Birding Park from the water. Kayaks and a shuttle service will be provided by Knoxville Adventure Collective.

Waterfront Ride

Date: June 10
LeMond Bikes will join the group as we go for a group bike ride. Beginners are welcome as this will be an easy ride with nice views.

Paddle the Holston River

Date: July 1
Meet at Knoxville Adventure Collective as we shuttle together to Holston River Park and float downriver back to the starting point. This is a beautiful paddle with opportunities to see wildlife and gorgeous views of Downtown Knoxville.

Paddle Boarding the Tennessee River

Date: August 12
Try something new as we grab paddleboards and float the Tennessee River! We will warm up with some yoga at Knoxville Adventure Collective before we hit the water, where brave souls may try a few poses while floating!

South Knox Hike

Date: September 9
This month is all about hiking for exercise as we head to I.C. King Park for nature trails with steady elevation gain. We will break a sweat as we hike new trails and loop the fishing lake.

Seven Islands Birding Hike

Date: October 7
Join us for a pleasant hike at the beautiful and pastoral Seven Islands State Birding Park. Expert birders will join us on the hike to tell us about the variety of species that can be found at the park.

South Knox Pub Crawl

Date: November 11
We will enjoy a more urban hike in South Knoxville and make a few stops at local breweries for refreshment.

Holiday Lights Hike

Date: December 9
Join the group as we hike a downtown loop to marvel at the many holiday decorations filling the streets.

A special cocktail party in the historically-significant gardens of Bill and Crissy Haslam

A very special cocktail party in the historically significant gardens of former Governor and First Lady, Bill and Crissy Haslam, will let guests hear from a celebrated author and tour the recently restored Jens Jensen Garden.

Author Victoria Johnson will speak on American Eden, her acclaimed biography of Dr. David Hosack and his journey in post-Revolutionary America to create our country’s first botanical garden.

Nashville Landscape Architect Ben Page will introduce the recently restored Jens Jensen Garden. Danish-born Jensen was a highly original landscape architect whose works are marked by harmonious use of natural terrain and native flora.

Tickets to the event are $250 per person and attendance will be limited. The event benefits Legacy Parks and a portion of the contribution is tax deductible.

Outdoor Knoxville Initiative

Legacy Parks’ Outdoor Knoxville initiative has a goal of making Knoxville’s incredible natural and recreation assets an economic driver for our region.

The initiative includes:

  • Transforming a city building into the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center, a destination where residents and visitor can get gear and learn how to recreate in the region
  • Creating and operating OutdoorKnoxville.com, a comprehensive website with events, activities, organizations, products, and other information, making it easy for anyone to get out and play
  • Assisting organizations and groups – both local and national – produce outdoor events; and educating and advocating for more outdoor recreational opportunities.
